Effective Ways to Kick the Body Into Recovery Mode

The resilience of the human body is one of the most marvelous things in existence. While we may need to do a little something to enhance the process and make it as effective as possible, the body does a great job of healing itself. This is true of both physical and mental wounds. How can you help kick your body into recovery mode when faced with various forms of illness, injury, or trauma? Here are a few tips.

Fighting the Common Cold Naturally

This prevalent virus can put a person out of commission for days. Symptoms last for one to two weeks, varying from person to person. An average cold may result in three days where you feel worse and worse, followed by three days where you are the peak of your sickness, and finally, three days where you gradually make a recovery. So how do you give your body the opportunity it needs to fight back?

  • Rest – Take time to rest and recover. The more you try to push through a cold, the longer it will hang on.
  • Hydrate – Drink fluids regularly, primarily water. Water helps clear the bad stuff out of your body.
  • Fresh air – While you shouldn’t leave the house while you are sick, you don’t want to sit in the same stagnant air either. Try opening the windows to get some fresh air circulating. Obviously, if it is cold outside, you won’t want to open the windows all the way. But even a little fresh air will help.
  • Get some sun – Your body needs vitamin D for everything from calcium absorption to pain relief. Try to sit near a window that provides some sunlight for about half an hour per day. You can also take a vitamin D supplement.

Boosting Natural Defense During the Flu

Unlike a cold, the flu hits you all at once. You may feel fine and then a few hours later be entirely in the throes of it. Fortunately, you can reduce how long your main symptoms last, as well as the fatigue that comes after, if you do a few things to help your body recover.

  • Rest – Stay home! Not only will rest help you recover faster, but you also don’t want to spread the flu to others.
  • Use a humidifier – Increasing the moisture in the air may help with your congestion and cough.
  • Use peppermint or eucalyptus – These are active ingredients in some cough drops. Diffusing them into the air can also help open the breathing passages.
  • Sunshine and fresh air – Again, you don’t want to go out, so try cracking a window and resting in a location where you get some natural light.

Recovering After a Heart Attack

Surviving a heart attack takes a toll on a person as a whole. Helping your body to kick into recovery mode is essential. It can take several months before you feel like your old self again. Here are a few tips to help the recovery go smoothly.

  • Avoid stress – Stress may play a role in having a heart attack in the first place. You certainly don’t need more stress while your body is still recovering.
  • Stay comfortable – Extreme temperatures stress the body, so try and remain in climate-controlled locations while you recover.
  • Gradually increase activity – Your doctor can help you to know when it is the optimal time to add new activities to your daily routine. A cardiac rehabilitation program may be available to you.
  • Quit smoking – If you are a smoker, this likely contributed to your heart attack. Now is the time to quit for good.
  • Get enough sleep – When daylight savings beings in March, there is always a sudden uptick in heart attacks. One hour can make that big of a difference. So be sure to get at least seven hours of sleep per night.

Natural Recovery After Breaking a Bone

Depending on the extent of the break, bones take weeks or even months to heal. Your body needs energy to heal, so be sure to increase your caloric intake. Protein is especially useful for helping the body to heal. There may also be specific vitamins and minerals you need more of in your diet. Calcium and vitamin D (vital for absorbing calcium) are particularly crucial. Smoking slows down healing. If you are a smoker, it’s time to quit.

Tips for Recovery from Emotional Trauma

Even more than physical trauma, emotional trauma may take months or even years of recovery. The recovery process is different for everyone, so be patient with yourself. Following a disaster or other form of trauma, try to get back to your regular daily routine as fast as possible. Maintain regular sleeping and eating schedules. You may be able to find a local support group for trauma survivors. If you are dealing with depression, anxiety, or PTSD, don’t be afraid to talk to someone about it. Whether you need a close friend or a professional therapist, talking out your feelings can be one of the best ways to pick up the pieces.
